The Best Diy Homeowners Toolkit: Learn which tools are essential to complete almost any DIY project at home.
Today, I’m revealing the basic tools every DIY homeowner needs when just starting and showing you how these tools can carry you through most DIY projects.
In the do-it-yourself age we live in it’s become insanely popular to do DIY projects at home instead of hiring it out. Homeowners worldwide are doing anything from building furniture to installing new tile and light fixtures which can save a ton of money!
For most of us, doing it yourself takes a job that might be out of reach due to budget, and makes it attainable! That my friend is music to my ears.
Just like any job, certain tools are required to ensure the ability to finish projects quickly and easily. In the beginning, knowing what tools to buy and what can wait can feel like a daunting task.
We have slowly added tools to our collection with each project. When we started we didn’t have many so each time we did a project, we would purchase something new.
It could be something small or even a large power tool, either way taking this approach will allow you to build a great set of tools over time. Having the right tools for the job is half the battle.
If you are just starting your DIY journey this is the perfect way to build a tool collection slowly without going over budget.
With several years in the DIY game and numerous projects under our belt, I’ll show you the basic tools you’ll need to complete projects at home without spending a ton.
Here are the tools we use time and time again

Power Tools Every DIY Homeowner Needs
For this section, I’ll link the most affordable as well as the brand of each Power tool that we currently own.
Drill: Out of every tool that we have we use this one the most for everything from installing decor pieces to building furniture. We use this baby almost every time we begin a project so if you can only buy one thing to start, a drill would be my number one recommendation.
Miter Saw: When we first started, this was the only saw we owned, and let me tell you it has saved us more than once when it came to updating our home. It is great for cutting molding, trim, angles, DIY furniture or just cutting wood in general.
Circular Saw: We don’t reach for this often but when we are dealing with long boards it comes in handy and we also use this when ripping large pieces of wood down to the needed width.
Sander: When doing any kind of woodworking you will always need a sander when it’s time for finishing. This one has done great for us and is pretty affordable.
Brad Nailer + Compressor Combo: I can’t tell you how much this set has come in handy since we’ve been working on our home. It is great for tons of woodworking jobs big and small. If you don’t want to swing for something with the need for a compressor Ryobi has this battery-operated option that would be perfect.
Kreg Jig: If furniture building is something you plan to do this setup is something you’ll want to invest in. Using this jig you will be able to easily create perfect pocket holes which will leave your furniture pieces looking seamless. We waited to buy this during our desk project and have since used it over and over again. It has 100% paid for itself. If you don’t plan on building any furniture or cabinets, this can probably wait until you need it, but its a great tool to have around.
Wagner Spray Tech: This happens to be one of my favorite tools for painting walls.
There you have it. With just these few basic tools, you can easily begin your DIY homeowner journey without having to buy an entire shop full of tools.
One of the easiest ways to accumulate tools without blowing the budget is to simply invest in new pieces as you go. Yes, it does make each project cost a little more, but spreading the cost out over time has made tool buying so much easier for us. Years later, we have more tools than we could ever need and can complete just about any project.
