Today I want to talk about our Master Bedroom Design Plans and a few of the ways we determined our style. If you’re a regular follower you know when we moved into our home we made tons of bad purchases, mostly on the large pieces. The only true reason I can give for that is we rushed through the process just to fill the space.
We never discussed the type of feel we wanted our home to have. All we knew is he wanted modern and I wanted full-blown shabby chic farmhouse and I don’t mean the modern farmhouse style you see now, I mean the kind where everything is covered in chipped paint, plates on the walls etc. From then on it was just a constant battle of wills, he hated every single thing I brought home and I was too stubborn to take his opinions into account.
That being said what has happened over the past year has shocked even me, you see after I slowed down and stopped buying decor just to fill our space, I noticed I still wasn’t happy with the direction our home was going and something just wasn’t right.
So from that point on every time I would see something I loved I went out of my way to think about it more and determine what it was I loved about it. By doing that I finally realized the problem, I was buying items and styling our home in a way that wasn’t us!
You see I didn’t actually love shabby chic farmhouse style, I loved the natural wood elements of the style but my style was actually much more and I’m choking on this word as it comes out due to my incessant fighting with the hubs about our design style…. Modern glam with a touch of farmhouse.
Once I confessed this to my husband I thought he may pass out. We argued so much about our decor it was ridiculous. He had been so frustrated and I’m sure ready to strangle me at times but who could blame him, I was not taking his opinion or needs into account which was totally unfair considering it is his home just as much as it is mine. After the confession, we actually discussed what we wanted and how to mix our styles.
Now that we have a color palette, style and a plan things are so much easier! This is what should have happened from day one but I was so stuck in my ways that there was no reasoning with me.We did pick out our major purchases together so were both at fault there, but most of our decor pieces were all me.
Since we are both on the same page now and know what direction were going, it has made things so much easier! No more stupid purchases that don’t match our style or buying things just to fill a space. We no longer purchase things unless we totally love them and once the color options are narrowed down it makes it an easy yes or no if it doesn’t fit into those options.
In the next few weeks I will go into a little more detail on the steps to take to end up with a room you absolutely love and how to determine your design style. But for now here is our Master Bedroom Design Plan.
First thing we did was sell our bed then we spent part of Saturday and all day Sunday painting and getting things prepared. This coming Saturday our new bed will be delivered and I literally cannot wait for you guys to see it! It’s amazing and covered in tufts! We hope to have everything finished and ready for the reveal by next Tuesday’s post.
In the meantime, if you haven’t seen our office makeover reveal you can see that here, the light color that is on the walls is the color we went with for our master. Also I would love to know what you struggle with the most when it comes to your home? Is it pin pointing you style? Maybe it’s picking out the right decor pieces or mixing patterns? Whatever it is I’m dying to know.

So excited for the big reveal – can’t wait. The office is SO COOL! My struggle is always that our house is small (1500 square feet) and when I decorate, I’m always overly cautious about it looking cluttered since it’s so small…so, it ends up looking sparse. Sounds crazy, but it’s a real problem for me.

Linda thank you so much for your sweet comments, I literally cannot wait to show you guys! Trust me I totally understand what you mean about cluttered, the last house we lived in was about 900 sq feet! Can you believe that? It was so tiny.
I think there are ways you can pack a punch in a small space without it looking overpowering or cluttered it’s all about using the right mixture of pieces. Take the office for example, I used the huge rug, striped curtains, and pop of leopard to make the space fun. But I kept the walls toned down since so much was going on with everything else. It is the smallest room in our house, maybe 100 sq feet.
Even if your style is more toned down, you could use oversized art pieces which always look great or accessories in gold or silver to give it an extra pop of color. If you add in different textures say with a chunky throw blanket, wood elements, different metals etc it can completely bring the room to life without the need for tons of stuff.
I honestly think what works best for me is being able to actually see what a piece will look like with everything else before I purchase. I used to fly by the seat of my pants and we all know where that got me 🙁 So now I always make a mood board for each room so I can play with different pieces before I lock something in.
